Groundhog Day (1993)

groundhog

I know this movie is pretty old now but I watched it for the first time last weekend as I was told it was a ‘feel good film’ and you can’t go wrong with a ‘feel good film’ can you?

So the story to this movie is that self-centered weatherman Phil (Bill Murray) is fated to live the same day over and over again.  That day is, Groundhog Day.  Like yourselves and probably the rest of the audience I had no idea what Groundhog Day was but luckily for us it’s explained pretty early on in the movie and is basically the day when a little groundhog (google them, they’re cute) predicts how soon winter is going to arrive and stay for.   It’s just as silly as it sounds I’ll be honest, Phil starts off confused as you would be and thinks the town is playing tricks on him and then he starts to take advantage of his situation.  He uses a lot of his time trying to seduce his producer Rita (Andie MacDowell) but things don’t go as well as he hopes…

The acting in this movie is typical 90’s rom-com really, I can’t really say Bill’s performance was amazing but it was watchable… After seeing his later movie’s it’s difficult to picture him as a romantic lead though so watch this with an open mind… It’s a pretty cheesy film but I have seen worse movies and I do understand that the film is trying to get a message across in that you’re one choice or action away from a completely different life. Andie MacDowell was pretty wooden in this for me, I think they could have cast this far better, any other girls from St Elmo’s Fire would have done a better job in my opinion…

This is a film that has an interesting concept and I did enjoy watching it however, if they do remake this film (let’s face it one day, they will….) it needs to be cast better.  I did like how after failed attempts at dating Rita, Phil does see that there’s more to life but I think I’d have found it more interesting personally if this movie had a different outcome in the end.

Overall it’s worth a watch, if you want something with a bit of meaning to it but not have to be completely switched on while watching it.

Perfect Popcorn Score – I’m giving this a 6.5, the story is interesting and it’s funny in some parts but Andie MacDowell isn’t great as a lead love interest… 6.5/10

No One Lives (2012)

nol

This was one of many  movies just added onto my Sky movie package so I decided to give it a go.  It just sounded like a film filled with violence and let’s face it folks, sometimes it’s just nice to switch off and watch something like that…

So it’s a film that get’s into it quite early on and just doesn’t stop from there.  There is a ‘crazy’ red-neck family in this movie, aren’t they always fun? Luke Evans plays the main character, he’s got no name though (ohhhh mysterious) and he’s completely cold and ruthless all the way through the movie.

Basically the family kidnap Luke and his girlfriend when robbing them proves difficult, they try to kill the pair and then the tables are turned…

The film seems pretty low budget but the cast are decent actors. Adelaide Clemens is really good in this film however, I won’t say much about her character as it’s an interesting situation… I will say though that I actually thought it was Carey Mulligan (my bad) because the pair look so similar, whilst on that subject Michelle Williams could also be related to the two of them…

There’s no effects really other than your standard gore and violence, which is all filmed pretty well. There’s plenty of torture scenes too so if you’re squeamish this isn’t a film for you…

This movie isn’t just your average gory redneck in the middle of nowhere movie, there’s a few twists in the story which leave you unsure of who you’re supposed to be rooting for. I really enjoyed the film, it keeps you guessing and there’s a slight twist to it.  A simple story really but very well written and the ending did leave me wanting more which rarely happens when it comes to this type of film. I think they could defiantly do more with Luke Evans character here that wouldn’t ruin this movie or be a terrible idea for another film. Basically if you want a fast paced, action ride with a large amount of ‘mindless violence’ then this is the movie for you! (Making it one of my dad’s favorites…)

Perfect Popcorn Score – I’m giving it a solid eight it’s good violent fun and there’s an interesting sub-plot going on within a straight forward story-line that makes this movie stand out. Decent acting for a low budget film too… 8/10

Dunkirk (2017)

dunkirk

The trailers for this movie are all over the internet at the moment and I’m a fan of Christopher Nolan (let’s face it, who isn’t…) so I decided to watch this movie the other day at the cinema..

It’s quite a slow starting film and it’s basically following a number of characters that intertwine with each other during the events of Dunkirk.

There’s not a one main character as such and each person you see has their own story to tell and it’s filmed really well so that it covers all bases.  You see Dunkirk from the ground, the sea and the sky, each point of view is equally as important and it’s a very moving story.  For those of you unaware of the history of Dunkirk it was an awful time during the Second World War where both British and French soldiers were being forced to the beaches by the Germans.  Boats were only able to carry so many and so, as the poster above says, home came for them.  Meaning everyone back home with a ship that could sail went to Dunkirk themselves to bring the stranded soldiers back home.

The cast in this film are all brilliant, we’ve got both big names and relativity unknown actors in fairly large roles.  Tom Hardy is great, as always as pilot Farrier who despite the amount of fuel in his aircraft continues to defend his fellow Brits.  OK for those 1 Direction fans, I’ll say it… Harry Styles wasn’t terrible, he was actually pretty decent as a soldier who is let’s face it, kind of racist…

The effects were spot on, I expected nothing less from something with a budget like this though.  It didn’t go overboard, apparently Nolan wanted to use as little CGI as possible and it really paid off.  There’s a lot of tension in the music scores used as well, typical Zimmer and you can’t fault it.

Overall this film is worth a watch, it’s your typical very good war film and there’s a lot of those out there these days.  It does jump timeline wise though just to warn you as I could tell it did cause a little confusion when I looked at my fellow cinema goers when certain scenes begin at different points.  It’s another bittersweet one for you really because, it was an awful event and should not have happened but it really brought people together and proved that there are some good people in the world willing to help others.

Perfect Popcorn Score –I’m giving it a nine, only because of the timelines as they did get me at first and also there were thousands of ships that came to aid the soldiers and it only showed about 35… just thought it could have been a really great and powerful scene and message to the audience…  – 9/10.

Cruel Intentions (1999)

ci

So this movie has been remade and the plot has been used in many films, to be honest this film itself is a modern take on the movie Dangerous Liaisons.

The plot is that two step siblings Kathryn (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Sebastian (Ryan Phillipe) have a bet, if he can charm his way into bed with virgin Annette (Reese Witherspoon) he gets to sleep with his sister.  If he looses the bet she gets his precious car.

It’s a very well done film, you can see that the actors actually wanted it to be a hit and worked very hard to make it one.  I’ve not seen Dangerous Liaisons  myself so I can’t make a comparison between the two films.  The characters and their lives do make it seem like your average American high-school movie but the way it’s written and how the plot works make it one that stands out.  Kathryn is so two-faced, she’s obsessed with everyone thinking she’s perfect and an angel so that she can get away with being the complete opposite.  Take note of this please, for future reference, it’s not always the kids in the lower classes that may not be as pretty that manipulate and bully others, sometimes it’s the ones up the teachers asses that they’d never suspect (trust me).

You start out hating Sebastian, only to almost like the guy later in the film.  Not because he’s ‘found himself’ but because he has the balls to tell it how it is. Annette is pretty sassy for the girl he preys on and I like that, she’s not a doormat and tells him exactly what she thinks of him from the off.

The acting is spot on, especially Gellar she’s brilliant as the bitchy Kathryn and I’m surprised she doesn’t get more roles like this actually. The whole cast work really well with each other and they’ve all been in other films or hung out since.

There’s no special effects to mention with it just being a teen movie but the soundtrack is great.  That end scene where one of my personal favorites, The Verve – Bittersweet Symphony plays is perfect, that song fits the ending so well.

Overall, this movie deserves a watch and is better than most modern day rom-coms it’s clever and well acted.     I’ve seen interviews and the people behind this movie really wanted it made and you can see that.

Perfect Popcorn Score –I’m giving it a strong seven, good plot, good acting and great soundtrack – 7/10.

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (2015)

scout

OK so, normally I avoid these kinds of films because I think it’s going to be a disaster like the Epic Movie’ franchise however, I decided to give this movie a go as it was showing on Sky and I just needed something to watch…

So the premise of the film is pretty simple, there’s a zombie apocalypse in a small American town and three guys who happen to also be scouts try and survive and save their friends.  It also touches on peer pressure and the whole, ‘we need to be popular to get laid’ typical teen movie story-line.

There’s not any really well known actors in this film, I have seen a couple of people in small roles in other films but that’s about it so I was quite surprised too laugh as much as I did.  The acting is pretty decent, it’s your typical American teen comedy and I’ll be honest the plot shouldn’t work as well as it does.  Tye SheridanLogan Miller and Joey Morgan are the three scouts and they’re not quite as good as the Superbad trio but they’re not bad and like I said, I did laugh quite a lot at this film.

The zombie effects aren’t as awful as a lot of films out there but could have been better, it’s probably on par with those used in Pride, Prejudice and Zombies to give you an idea.  I don’t usually like it when they have animal zombies in films because it doesn’t look realistic and to be fair, it didn’t in this movie but it did add to the comedy so I’ll let it slide because I think this film is just one big piss-take of the zombie film genre.

From the beginning of film there’s plenty of laughs and there’s one scene in particular that really just got me but I won’t ruin it for you and let you work out which scene that is… If you’re a fan of the horror comedies like Tucker and Dale then this movie is right up your street or if you just want something funny and easy to watch then I’d recommend giving this a try.  It’s not something you take seriously and it’s not up to the standard of Zombieland I’ll be honest but it’s clearly not got the same budget and still ends up being a decent movie.

Perfect Popcorn Score – I’m giving this movie a six, it’s got decent acting, easy to follow plot and some great laughs…  – 6/10.

Se7en (1995)

sven

I’m a big movie buff, as you can probably tell… However, I only saw this film for the first time the other day (I like my view from under this rock, OK?)

So for those of you that haven’t seen this movie, I’d definitely recommend it but it’s what I call heavy because you need to be ‘switched on’ the whole way through to get what’s going on…

So the plot for the film is that there’s a serial killer, killing people and using the seven deadly sins as motives.  You follow detectives Somerset (Morgan Freeman) and Mills (Brad Pitt) work on the case to try and catch the killer.   It’s proven very difficult because this killer leaves zero fingerprints or any other leads behind.

As with all thrillers, these cops have some personal issues. Somerset for example is on his last case and wants to leave the city as he’s just had enough of dealing with people like this killer.  Mills on the other hand wants to establish himself as a good detective and is keen to catch this killer to prove that.  Both characters are on opposite ends of a spectrum and it works well because when Somerset is ready to give up Mills keeps going and when he misses something Somerset sees it.

The acting in this film is brilliant, I mean with a cast like this one you’re not going the be disappointed.  Both Pitt and Freeman are great as the two lead detectives and don’t try to out do one another, they just take their roles seriously and do them justice.  Gwyneth Paltrow is also good as Pitt’s wife in the film who is struggling to adjust to her new life in the city.

There’s no special effects as such however the crime scenes are very gory and well done and it does look very realistic especially for a film done in 19995. The ‘crimes’ themselves are well thought out and the one for lust is especially grim in my opinion.

I really enjoyed this film, it’s not your typical ‘catch the killer’ film and has some big twists in it that keep you watching until the very end and oh the ending is good! It’s difficult to review a thriller without giving any spoilers I’ll be honest but all I can say is the killer himself is great and the actors performance is menacing.  Overall, it’s worth a watch if you have the time.

Perfect Popcorn Score – I’m giving this film a nine, brilliant acting, good story and a now classic movie.  9/10

The Crow [Reboot]

the crow

This is one of my favorite films and I will get around to reviewing it properly for you guys some day soon.  I think they need to leave this film alone now.  The first, original film in 1994 was a pure classic however, like most classics it spawned an array of crappy sequels in this case three. There was also a television adaption that judging by the reviews was actually pretty decent so, I might give it a go one day…

This has the exact same story line plot showing on IMDb as the first original film so it’s a reboot.  The only cast showing is that Jason Momoa is rumored to play the lead role of Eric Draven/The Crow.

As much as I like Jason Momoa, he’s got some big boots to fill because Brandon Lee played this role perfectly before his tragic and untimely death during filming.  I don’t personally feel that he’s right for this part because he’s an intimidating looking guy from the off and I just don’t see how that will work with this character.  I think the below actors would be better…

Jared Leto

jaredleto

Leto is an Oscar winning actor and has played various roles such as, The Joker. He’s also a musician so I think he’d do this role justice and fit it perfectly.

Jared Padalecki

jaredp

Best known for his role as Sam in Supernatural he’s got that ‘brooding’ look down and I think he could also be a contender for this role.

Taylor Kitsch

Friday Night Lights

Taylor has got some series acting range, I’d defiantly recommend catching the latest series of True Detective too see what I mean. He’d bring his range to this part and I think it’s the big break he needs.

I think the late Heath Ledger would have been the perfect choice to bring Eric Draven back onto our screen but sadly we will never get to see this…

A lot of actors, such as Bradley Cooper, have actually dropped out of playing this role due to crew and cast members of the original saying the set was cursed.  There was some seriously bad and strange weather and a member of the crew suffered from burns, then sadly the death of Brandon Lee from a real bullet been shot rather than a blank.

I think they’d need to cast the part of Sarah carefully as she’s a key part to making this film work.  Here are some actresses I think could be good for the role…

Chloe Moretz

chloem

She’s a great young actress and already has a lot of movies under her belt.  I think her acting in Let Me In and Carrie make her a wise choice for the part of Sarah.

Abigail Breslin

abib

She won my heart as Little Miss Sunshine and has managed to land herself some very big roles ever since, she’d play Sarah very well.

Freya Tingley

frey

With previous roles in both Hemlock Grove and Once Upon A Time this big screen role would cement her movie career as it’s well deserved.

Who do you think should be cast in this reboot? Comment below…
